The Lucky angel enjoys a reputation that is shrouded in lore and triumph. Commissioned by King Louis XVI of France, designer Augustin Dupre sought to design a coin that would invoke a sense of protection and certainty. The invocation took the form of the “Lucky Angel” sovereign round which garnered a reputation for its associations with luck. It is believed that the luck of the coin spared the life of the designer himself, at the base of a guillotine, with divine intervention. Lucky sailors and captains always embarked on voyages with a “Lucky Angel” in their pockets. Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have carried one around, and World War I fighter pilots were known to never fly without one. Thus the highly desirable nature of these coins has endured, as today, they are highly sought after by investors and collectors alike.

On the reverse side, is the depiction of an angel in the process of inscription, designed by Augustin Dupre. The national emblem of France, the French rooster, is seen next to the angel. République Française or The French Republic serves as the legend of the reverse.

The Obverse features the motto of the Third French Republic, “Liberte. Egalite. Fraternite”, or Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood, as the legend. Centered, is the coins 20 francs denominational value, as a wreath encircles it. The year of issue is seen below.
