This is the fifth release in the Scottsdale Mint Biblical Series showcasing dramatic scenes from the Bible. This coin has an unusual rimless design which allows the design to fill the entire field of the coin. The coin also features a wonderful, hand-finished antique patina that makes it appear as though it is an aged and treasured family heirloom. The rim of the coin matches the rest of the coin with it's weathered appearance, and has a laser-engraved serial number that matches the number on the antique-feeling certificate of authenticity.
The obverse has a Raphael Maklouf effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. When Maklouf sculpted the effigy of the Queen used on UK circulating coins from 1985 to 1997 he was accused of sculpting the Queen "flatteringly young". The same comment could be applied today to this coin.
The reverse features an adaptation of Gustav Dore's 1865 engraving by sculptor D'Almeida Novissimo. As told in Revelations 6:7-8, the high relief features Death riding a horse with a flowing cape and scythe in hand. The fourth horseman of the apocalypse is followed by a variety of demonic creatures. As with all of Dore's work, the atmosphere is dark and brooding.
This coin is the fifth in a series of six Biblical-themed coins to be released this year. It has a strictly limited mintage of only 1499, and is sure to sell out quickly.
This coin ships in a book-style case meant to resemble a 19th century bible.
