The Legacy of the Canadian Nickel series showcases the different designs under which nickels were issued in Canada since 1908. The Beaver is a truly iconic symbol of Canada, second only to the maple leaf as an object of national identity.
The reverse of this coin recreates the image of a Beaver sitting on a rock pile surrounded by water, with a chewed log beside it. The Beaver and the two maple leaves above have been gilded, and the detail of the engraving really stands out over the silver background. This design first appeared in 1937, and we hope it isn't leaving any time soon!
Interestingly, in spite of this coin having a full troy ounce of silver it has a face value of only five cents in keeping with the theme of the coin. The coin is about double the diameter of a standard nickel, which really allows the design to stand out.
A maximum mintage of 8500 means that this memorable coin will always be a sought after and prized collectible.
