This is the first 1 oz coin in the Royal Canadian Mint's O Canada 5-coin series which focuses on iconic Canadian images. This coin celebrates the wonder of the igloo. Designed by Canadian artist Yves Berube the reverse of the coin depicts an Inuit family completing the exterior of their home, the ingenious igloo. On the left side, the mother is trimming and tidying up the blocks while carrying a baby in an amaut carefully on her back. On the right side, the father is cutting out a small square for light that he will likely fill in with a clear ice block to make an "ice window". In front of the igloo is a leashed and harnessed husky ready to go for a sled run. The border features the words "Canada 25 Dollars 2014" and the outline is reminiscent of an igloo as viewed from above.
The obverse of the coin prominently displays the Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the words "Elizabeth II D.G. Regina"
The O Canada series will have 5 coins, each one featuring an iconic Canadian image. It is fitting that the igloo should be the first. Not only is it a renowned cultural symbol, but the ingenuity and practicality of the igloo in one of the worlds harshest environments is truly a marvel. This coin is made with 1 oz of 9999 pure silver. These coins make a great gift or addition to any Canadian coin or silver collection.
This coin comes with a serialized certificate in a maroon clamshell case and is limited to a mintage of only 8,500 worldwide.
