The Perth Mint of Australia introduced the world to the Golden Nugget bullion coin in 1987 with the release of four editions, ranging from 1 oz to 1/10 oz. These coins featured golden nuggets that were discovered throughout Australia that were distinguished by their size and weight. The "hand of faith nugget" was discovered in 1980, only 12 inches below the earth's surface by a man using a metal detector. As one of the first releases in the Golden nugget series, this 1/2 oz gold coin pays tribute to the rich bullion history of Australia and is provided at an affordable price point.

On the reverse side, is the hand of faith nugget in its exact likeness, resting in a horizontal position. This nugget weighed an astonishing 875 ounces or approximately 27 kg, with the dimensions of 18 x 8 x 4 inches. Encapsulating this image is the coin's title, denomination, and year of issue. Below the image is the nugget's title and year of discovery.

The obverse side features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, with a raised dotted circle rim border. Her majesty's effigy is encapsulated by her title, the coin's $50 denominational value which is guaranteed by the Australian government, and the nation of issue.

ABOUT THE PERTH MINT

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint's 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970.
